New detention centre threat for Bicester

Wednesday 15 June 05
Bicester Refugee Support today condemned the suggestion that the intended site of the accommodation centre for asylum seekers at Bicester could now instead be used for a secure detention facility. They condemned the idea as "an abuse of human rights and a huge waste of public money."

A spokesperson for BRS said that it was outrageous to lock up people who have not committed any crime. She added that current immigration detention facilities such as Campsfield in Oxfordshire, Yarl's Wood in Bedfordshire and Harmondsworth in London where fires and riots have broken out, are notorious for their inhumane regimes. "It is shameful and degrading to treat asylum seekers in this way" she said.

"Furthermore, it is a huge waste of public money to keep people imprisoned in a detention centre at a cost of at least £100 per person, per day. Asylum seekers should be allowed to live in the community, working and paying tax and reporting weekly to the authorities, a policy that has worked well in the past."

In an attempt to justify the £18 million of taxpayers money already squandered on one failed policy, the BRS spokesperson argued, "the government are now intending to throw yet more good money after bad.

"We don't want a detention centre in Bicester and we don't want them in the UK," she said.
