Association of Visitors to Immigration Detainees
(AVID)
"AVID is the national umbrella charity for groups visiting immigration
detainees. Britain currently detains around 2000 people of this type, and it
is planned to increase the number to 4000 in the future. They have the right
to apply for bail but this can be difficult for those who may have left
their own country in haste…The groups which visit detainees are all
independent and have different organisational structures and ways of
working. AVID provides advice, runs training programmes and spreads good
practice."

Barbed Wire Britain (BWB)
Offers useful information about detention centres in Britain. Good for
finding out about campaigns and events around the various detention centres.
They say: "Over 1,800 people, nearly all of them asylum seekers, are locked
up in detention camps and prisons in Britain, without trial and without time
limit and with no automatic right to bail. The government is building new
detention centres with a target capacity of 4000.The asylum seeking process
is arbitrary and punishes innocent refugees not for anything they have done,
but in the hope of deterring others from exercising their right under the
Geneva Convention to claim asylum in Britain. The Barbed Wire Britain
network wants to stop this shame."
Bristol Defend the Asylum Seekers Campaign
"The
Bristol Defend the Asylum Seekers Campaign was set up to counter the abuse
currently being aimed at asylum seekers by politicians and sections of the
press... We believe that asylum seekers deserve our compassion and help.
They do not deserve to be vilified and treated as criminals."

Refugee Council
Refugee Council is the largest and one of the most established

from the Government so cannot be assumed to be entirely neutral, but is
highly respected as a leading authority on refugee issues. This is an
essential site for anyone with an interest in refugees.
Refugee Week
Refugee Week is an awareness raising week held every year in June. It
celebrates the contribution of refugees and asylum seekers to the UK, and
tries to dispel some of the myths about asylum in this country.
Refugee Week 2003 will be held from 14 to 20 June, and this site contains
some really good ideas and information for anyone who wishes to get
involved.
Scottish Refugee Council
Campaigns against negative press coverage and promotes positive images of
asylum seekers and refugees in the Scottish Media. Is creating a
